HOWDY EVERYBODY!!!
When I've been asked to describe my music, I draw a blank. The inevitable next question is "Who do you sound like?" That question is a little easier to answer. (but not much) I've been told my vocals sound like Iggy Pop, Leonard Cohen and the lead singer for The Damned. My music has been called a combination of David Bowie, Joy Division, The Butthole Surfers and even Capt. Beefheart. I don't try to set out like anyone, or do a certain style of music. Each song has it's own life, and it's own time. I can literally be planning to work on a certain song, then I turn on the equipment and start playing a totally different song. I guess I could never schedule a rehearsal or recording schedule if I had to.
That's why I glad I'm an Independent artist. I don't have to answer to a roomful of corporate executives planning every note I play. But being an indie artist can have it's drawbacks too. Without any backing, I and tens of thousands of other unsigned artists have to try to find ways to be heard. As far as making money off of music, even big name acts can end up in major debt. This is because the music industry is geared against artists, and toward the bottom line. It is actually easier to just give our music away. But there are major changes taking place that has the corporate giants freaking out to no end. Not just record companies, but radio broadcasters too. Between the internet and satellite radio, the strangle hold media giants have held for so long is slowly being broken

I recently went through Hurricane Ike and luckily didn't have much damage from it. But others weren't so lucky. I've decided to put together a benefit cd to help out with the rebuilding of our area. It's a various artist compilation cd to raise money for the Houston chapter of Habitat For Humanity. They will be helping to repair/rebuild houses that were damaged/destroyed by Hurricane Ike like they've been doing in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Many of the artists have been played on my A. Gene Punckbowee Show podcast. These artists represent various genres ranging from electronica, reggae, punk, alternative, experimental and industrial. I want to give a huge THANK YOU to them for helping with this project. So be sure to check out the Hurrcane Ike Benefit page here for more details!
